Our partner, Carlos Llorente, has lectured on the topic of ship brokers, ship agents and freight forwarders, as part of the master program in Shipping Business and Law offered by the Spanish Maritime Institute (IME) (www.ime.es) and the Comillas Pontifical University (www.comillas.edu), presently at its 39th edition. These three relevant maritime actors were dissected from a legal perspective (regulatory and private law), and particularly from their position as contractual partners. Following a necessary analysis of its theoretical background, the session focused on the understanding of typical problems derived from the intervention of these operators in the shipping business with the help of real situations extracted from the lecturer’s professional experience as a maritime lawyer. A comparative law approach (common law v. civil law) was also introduced in the discussion with the students.
